Focus on What Matters This Season

Well, I made it through my first semester of college. This is something I should be applauding myself for, because it truly is not an easy task, especially being hours away from home. I wish these past three months were easier, but they were truly some of the hardest. Now, I’m on Christmas break relaxing and reflecting on this past semester and what matters most to me. What matters to you?

A lot of students, at any grade level, care deeply about their grades. They care so much that their happiness is determined by a number on a page: a GPA. I think a lot of us are guilty of it, but it is a habit we should break. It doesn’t matter in the bigger picture.
A lot of times during the semester, I gave myself a hard time about my major and my grades. My major going into college was Business Marketing, something I found interesting but not creative enough. When I was on this path, I questioned myself as well as the school I’m at. Since then, I’ve changed to AD/PR and I feel like this will give me a good balance of everything I love.
My grades over the semester had been significantly good, but I had to be in Precalculus 2 for Business school. If you know me, you know I hate math with a burning passion. At the end of the semester, I had to realize that the class did not matter in the long run.
So, with all this came more struggles for a typical out-of-state student: adjusting to a completely new place. What matters now is that I’m home, and in the new year, I’ll go back to Chicago and start new classes.
And, what matters the most is that I’m here with my family and friends who love me and support me. I’m so very lucky to have them. They are what matter this season, and next, and twenty years from now; everything else is pretty irrelevant. They have shaped me into who I am. No GPA, or grade, or even someone who brings me down, will affect me.
We are all capable of anything we set our minds to. So, when finals are over and you can give yourself a big pat on the back for getting through it all (or Starbucks as a reward), take your break to unwind and spend time doing the things that matter to you.
I’ll be right here, blogging and spending time with my family, boyfriend, and friends.
Happy Holidays!

Jillian, thank you for sharing such wise words. We forget some of the simple things that are most important in the busy day to day. Congratulations on your first successful semester! Make sure you relax over your break!
PS-I hate math too…in the grand scheme of things as long as you can calculate a percentage when you see an amazing deal…you're good 😉
    Have a wonderful day!

Great post! I myself was very studious and focused on studies and honestly think that academia is my true calling once I actually recover from my Master's program! I went away for studies to england (Oxford) and I get the whole being far from home and the having the pressure to do well. But one thing at a time and I always reminded myself to have fun and understand that the grades that we get arent the be all and end all!

Congrats on completing your first semester!

Hey, Lauren! Thank you so much. I hope you have a relaxing holiday season as well! I'm glad to know that math won't have to be a huge part of my life in the future! Haha, especially calculus!
