I’ve been adjusting my diet for the whole month of July and have never felt better. I decided to start this process because of how unhappy and emotional I was feeling, in addition to lacking the creativity I use to have. I never knew how easy it would be to stay away from fried and greasy foods, gluten, and dairy.
Before this, I had already been dairy-free for two years, so, if you’re going to cut out certain foods, I’d suggest taking it slow first. That way you can really examine how you feel after going a week or two without a certain type of food.
There are many foods out there that are delicious and pretty darn good for you as well. Here are the 7 diet foods I have been grabbing for and can’t get enough of this month…
Detox Island Green Smoothie
This smoothie from Tropical Smoothie Cafe will fill you up and keep you energized and healthy! It’s made with spinach, kale, mango, pineapple, banana, & fresh ginger which is used as a natural sweetener. Personally, I substitute the banana for kiwi to give it a little extra sweetness. Honestly, I would drink this every day if I could. It’s extremely refreshing and now that I’ve been on this health kick for almost a month, I have the strength to choose this option over ice cream. It’s got the same consistency as any icy treat, but it’s only 182 calories!
Chicken Fattoush Salad
For the longest time, you could not get me to touch a salad let alone eat one. But one day, I tried some of my mom’s fattoush salad and I never went back. If you’re not a fan of balsamic dressing or vinaigrettes, you might fancy a fattoush. A typical fattoush dressing is made with lemon and sumac. This Middle Eastern salad contains cucumbers, tomatoes, raw onions, pita chips, and I always prefer to add chicken because it’s delicious and adds protein.
Granola, Goat Yogurt, and Fruit
Like the smoothie, this is a great way to add a little bit of sweetness into your diet without the sugar. Since I’m dairy-free I go with goat yogurt. (If you’re actually allergic to dairy, though, I’m not sure it’s the best option. I have a dairy sensitivity and goat’s yogurt is just fine for me, but be cautious; try almond milk yogurt if necessary). I purchase my goat yogurt from Trader Joe’s, but it’s definitely a different taste than cow’s milk yogurt. I add fruit, like raspberries and strawberries, for a sweeter taste, as well as Nature’s Path pumpkin flax seed granola.
I don’t know about you, but when I just want something light to eat I look toward soup. They are also easy to make. I always think chicken broth with gluten-free noodles and veggies is a good idea. Some other choices may not always be the healthiest, but they are usually in small portions but still filling. I go for chicken lemon rice soup whenever I’m at a Greek restaurant. I am truly an addict for lemons.
My mom’s been picking me up all these gluten-free products lately, including bread. It’s not always the tastiest, but I just need some bread sometimes, ya know? I have this gluten-free flatbread from Flatout and it’s quite good. I like to make sandwiches on it or just munch on a bit when I’m hungry. If you go out to eat a lot, I suggest trying to scope out gluten-free options. The other day I was craving my favorite pizza from Blaze Pizza, so I decided to look up if they had gluten free dough. To my luck they did so I treated myself a little bit. Honestly I just think gluten affects my mood as well as my sinus problem, so not having it at all or often has really helped me recover.
I’ve tried half of the juice flavors they have to offer and I am shocked at how much I like them. The first one I tasted was called Cleanse containing green tea, passion fruit, apple, and coconut. I have to say, this one was a little clumpy because of all the green tea sentiment that formed together, but the taste was pretty good. The other two I tried, Fat Burner and Detox, where even superior to the first. Along with being healthy and yummy, iQ juice is also affordable. I got two bottles at a health grocery store for only $7. If I had gone to a juicery, one bottle would have been $9.
My go-to breakfast is an omelet filled with green peppers, onions, mushrooms, and chicken (or sometimes bacon). I’m a huge savory breakfast person and despise sweets in the morning. Breakfast is probably my favorite meal of the day, so much so I make eggs for dinner sometimes. Whenever I go out to eat, I scout out the eggs on the menu because I know it’s a safe call.
