Despite living in a cramped dorm and a cold city, it’s very important for me to be positive. Over the past few months here, I have collected things I love to make myself feel more at home. I have pictures in cute frames that remind me of all my great adventures and the people that I love. I have a bamboo plant and a little pumpkin for decoration. But, my favorite things are the quotes that grace my window sill and wall.
Without these beautiful but simple things, I would have probably wanted to give up by now; they truly keep me going.
One quote I taped up to my wall was give to me by Brandon, it reads:
“What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide what gets you out of bed in the mornings, what you do with your evenings, how you spend your weekends, what you read, who you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you. Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything.” -Pedro Arrupe, SJ
When I read it, it reminds me why I am doing the things I do. It reminds me why I focus on my blog so much. It reminds me why I am here, away from the people I love the most. It keeps me going and it keeps me positive because I know there are a lot of people that love me, but I also know that there are a lot of people that don’t get me, and that’s okay. What matters is the people who bring you up, support you, and love you.
This one isn’t on my wall or anything, but I like it. I made the graphic for it. Just like the “I can and I will” quote at the beginning of this post, this one shows me that I can do anything I set my mind to, but I have to realize it will take work and time. If you love something, though, you have to make goals to get it. Put yourself in situations that allow something good to happen.
For example, when I went to the blogger conference last week, I knew I was doing something good for myself and my blog. It was a bit of a step outside my comfort zone (considering I was one of the youngest people there), but none-the-less I did it and had a fabulous time. I met many women who brought me up with positive words like “keep kicking ass!” or “you’re going to go far!”. Just a few simple words like that made my life.
On the flip side, I try my best not to put myself in bad situations. This could be as simple as not going somewhere when I have a lot of homework to catch up on. It could also be not doing something that you wouldn’t normally do. Once, I had a bad gut feeling about something so I decided to steer away from it and, looking back, I’m very glad I did.
Follow your heart. You don’t need to do what’s “cool” to fit in, trust me. I have a lot of great friends that love me and accept me for who I am. Because I’m the girl who is striving toward a bigger goal, the one who would rather go to a coffee shop then a party; the one that will never give up her dream, no matter what anyone else says.

As an end note, I know being positive is often very difficult, because, in all honesty, there is a lot of negativity out there. There’s a lot of drama too, you know this, especially if you are a high school girl. When I escaped my all-girls high school (pause for a moment and think about all the drama), I thought I was going to be free of it all for the rest of time. Wrong. It’s a harsh reality, but there will always be drama and negativity. You just have to find ways to handle it and block it out.
Just remember: don’t let anyone pop your bubble of happiness…
